在六零年代，年輕人開始把自己的名字刻畫在住家附近的牆上。不過他們所用的 “名字” 並不是他們自己的原本名字，而是他們的外號；他們這麼做的原因就是為了要打響他們的街頭稱號。最早用名字來作塗鴉，是有一種畫分界線的意思在的。幫派分子呢，用塗鴉來標示他們的地盤；而住在當地的小孩子們則用塗鴉來標示誰是他們的朋友，誰是他們不喜歡的人。
塗鴉至今已蔚為一項小有歷史的創作藝術，然而這樣的蓬勃發展主要還是因為許多塗鴉作家的不斷努力。
塗鴉作家都有些專用術語，像是拿 “bomb (炸彈)”，“hit (碰撞)”，“kill (廝殺)” 來隱喻戰爭，暴力這些字眼。接著，我們把下面這些常聽到的詞彙來作個解釋。
Bomb – Prolific painting or marking with ink
也就是塗鴉的意思。
Burn – To beat the competition
意思就跟 battle 一樣。
Burner – A well-done wildstyle window-down whole car; a burner is a winner
Burner 就是從塗鴉競賽中勝出的人。
Cap, Fat or Skinny – Interchangeable spray-can nozzles fitted to can to vary width of spray
這幾個字都是代表可以相容許多不同種噴漆的互換式噴嘴。
Crew – Loosely organized group of writers, also known as a clique
由塗鴉畫家自組的團體。
Def – Really good (derived from "death")
就是很屌的意思。這個字是從 “death” 一字而來的，很可能是因為發音蠻像的。
Down – In part of the group or action
意指團體裡或畫作中的一部份。
Fade – To blend colors
調和顏色。
Going over – one writer covering another writer’s name with his own
塗鴉畫家把自己的名字畫在別人的名字上面 (這是相當不禮貌，也不鼓勵的行為。很有可能會被別人認為是挑釁。)
Hit – To tag up any surface with paint or ink
用顏料或墨水在任何可以作畫的平面上簽上自己的大名。
Kill – To hit or bomb excessively.
指作畫或簽名太過度宣染。
King – The best of the most
最屌的塗鴉畫家。
Piece – A painting, short for masterpiece. Eg. To piece => to paint graffiti
就是傑作 “materpiece” 的簡稱。意指塗鴉，當作動詞用。
Piece Book – A writer’s sketchbook
塗鴉畫家拿來畫草圖的簿子。
Tag – A writer’s signature with marker or spray paint
塗鴉畫家完成作品的時候，用噴漆或是其他可以作記的東西來加上的簽名。
Tagging up – Writing signature with marker or spray paint
寫上自己的簽名。
Throw up – A name painted quickly with one layer of spray and an outline
利用一層噴漆，再加上外框的技巧快速地繪上名字。
Top-to-bottom – A piece which extends from the top of the car to the bottom
塗鴉畫作從車頂延伸到到車底。
Toy – Inexperienced or incompetent
意指技巧不熟練，或是畫作不得體。
Wak – Substandard or incorrect
意指畫作水準不高，或是有犯了什麼錯誤。
Wildstyle – A complicated construction of interlocking letters
用字母的連結所構成一幅複雜畫作。
Writer – Practitioner of the art of graffiti
專業的塗鴉畫家。
